So, that also means I am NOT a perfect parent.
There are times when I yell at my kids, and I am sure I have failed them.
{Remember, it was ME getting my hair done while my son was throwing up at school?? Yeah, Ummm, that WAS me.}
But I hope the positive things I do with my boys outweigh the negatives of my being human and imperfect.
*******
I had a "teachable moment" with one of my boys. I thought I would share here.
Not for his humiliation, or even mine-but looking back on it, it went really well.
I don't recall exactly what it was that landed my son in hot water with me.
But I do recall I was steamed.
I was DONE.
I sent my son to the red bench {-which is our equivalent of the time-out spot} to think while I was deciding the punishment.
As I was figuring out how to solve this dilemma with my son and his behavior, I shot up a prayer to God, "Lord! I need your help here, in this situation! Guide me how to handle this one!"
*******
I thought of what to do.
I got out my Bible.
{An easy to read translation-The Living Paraphrase}
I wrote down some scriptures references from the book of Proverbs on wisdom.
I asked my son to come and copy them down in his new notebook (...let's call this notebook "your special gift from mom").
He can read, and write the words of God that will make the difference in his heart.
Because that is what most problems boil down to with kids-its a heart condition.
He apologized to me for his inappropriate behavior.
We discussed which verse really spoke to him.
Then we prayed together.
Disaster averted. Again.
Not due to my perfection or his, but due to the Truth that is wrapped up in love, and wisdom that we found in the Bible.
Lord, Continue to help me {And Tin Man} parent these boys of YOURS!

(...Who imperfectly parents, but knows Who To Go To when disaster needs to be averted!)
HOW DO YOU AVERT DISASTER IN YOUR HOME WITH YOUR KIDS?
Can you share a way you dicipline or teach your children that works???
Do tell~

What a great idea! Although my son is only 20 months old I am def. going to keep this one in my "to remember file"!
I think that is wonderful what you did...we have "seasons" here...it's good or it's really bad...my son and I can really clash when it comes to his responsibilties and love for his sisters.
I like this notebook thing...but sometimes, it's almost like life is so busy you are on autopilot and there are things that need to be addressed but you don't.
It's hard finding that balance!

What a great moment!! I would say both of you responded in an awesome manner.
Come see me soon.
I love that. What a wonderful way to reinforce what's right. Love it!

I know of mom's who do what you did and I LOVE it, I am excited to do it with Eli and Jasper when they are old enough.
Right now I talk to ELi about "taking off" his bad behaviour and "putting on" his good behavior and we talk through the bible verse and character trait we have to "put on." He likes to think he is really doing this action. I got it from Ginger Plowmen "Don't make me Count to 3" it is an excellent book and I loved it.
I have had Sumter copy a verse that fits the situation out of the Bible twenty times. Now before anyone thinks that I am using the Bible for punishment, let me say that by the time he has written the verse 10-15 times, he has not only written, but read and thought about what is on the paper. It is a very good tool to teach. He remembers and it touches his heart. I'm with you!
now that's how it's done...thoughtfully, patiently, lovingly....That's how God corrects us, right?
I hope I can be able to stop, take a minute and ask the Lord to help guide me in the disciplining of my little one.
Thank you for this post. And I'm sorry I haven't been around much, but I'm gonna pick back up my blog reading cause I've really missed you guys!
I love this idea. I also loved your adapted version of the Tamale Pie. I made it today while snowed in and my husband loved it too! :) thanks for sharing it.
This seems a great idea that worked so well. I do think if kids actually write things down themselves it does 'go in' more than if something is just read briefly. Thankfully we don't have many (if any) problems with our daughter. It's more a kind of getting organized and being ready lesson she needs sometimes but these last few weeks we have actually been early for school so things are looking up!.
Have a great weekend.

Great idea! I will use this when BBC gets a little older. For now I make him memorize scriptures. I ask him - What does God tell children? He'll say - Children, obey your parents. And then I'll say - And how are children supposed to do this? His response should be - Joyfully - but it ranges depending on how bad his heart condition is on that given day. Ha!
Thanks! Have a blessed week!
